FYI Support SQRL for iOS development - Business Model

Very happily joined the $2 / month level because I firmly believe in supporting great developers building systems and apps I want to have in my life (the same way I support LastPass, and good podcasting). I get paid for my work, and I don't expect to get the fruits of other peoples labor for free.

I'll also add that this was the same reason I gave no thought to purchasing the OwnCloud app (back in the days before I moved over to NextCloud). The desktop clients were free, but the mobile client was (IIRC) $2.99. It was totally worth it to me to invest in a platform I was actively using and invested in (given the hardware cost of building my, at the time OwnCloud server) especially because the ad-supported model inherently eats into the privacy of the system.

That being said, I also definitely appreciate that the patreon / tip jar model means that Jeff gets all of the proceeds, without paying Apple a 30% tax. Apple is already getting enough of my money (and will get more when I eventually have to replace my MBPro).

All of that being said, Jeff, I completely support whatever model best fits your needs and supports your continued work on this and other projects. Please know that I'll never question that, even if it means that at some point you have to abandon the volunteer model for a pay-for-it-up-front model.

I'm no longer contributing to this community because the moderator (PHolder) is too closed minded to allow differing options to be expressed freely on this forum. I've been harassed too many times by this little person and he's made it clear I'm not welcome here.

For reasons best known to themselves Patreon locked my account for a “safety” review immediately after your signup @Gristle. Probably just new account scrutiny.

The App will be free in the App store.
There will be no in App purchases.
There will be no mandatory in App purchases. There will be entirely voluntary options to fund ongoing development by in app purchases
The App will remain closed source.

There will be an in App "Tip Jar" or "Buy me a Coffee" link that will link you to a web page where users can optionally send me a few £/p ($/c) on a one off basis.

Put a one off tip in my tip jar

As an individual you can give me sustaining support to be able to spend more of my time on the App by becoming a patron:

Support me on Patreon
Bought coffee. Thanks for your hard work to the project.

Hi,

If you have signed up on the mail chimp (before today) list you should already have an invite for testflight.

If not you will be in the next batch.

App store launch will be when I consider it ready.
Where do I go to sign up for test flight?

Jeff, I just set up a new Wordpress blog for a friend of mine and decided to try installing the SQRL plugin.

Holy. Moley. That was slick. One click is all it took and now I have SQRL login on a custom site. It works amazingly well with your new app!

You all good now?

If not there is a link on this page that sends you to my Mail Chimp signup list.

If you signup there you will automatically get an invite.

Hi @diabolic,

Glad you like it.

As you can see I have not given up, just snails pace progress.

Hi Jeffa,
I have been lurking on this forum for a number of years.
When are you anticipating the ioS GA release? No pressure :). Just some forecast
Appreciated (as I know this has been a long road)

Hi Brian,

Welcome.

Well, to avoid TL;DR the quick answer is "I don't do estimates" but...

I am trying my hardest to spend at least a few minutes on this every day at the moment.

It is 21:50 in the UK right now and I have just sat down to work on the project. This is typical of when I get the chance to start work.

This is not how I want it to be, but this is just how much time I have to allocate to it right now.

The current status is:
The very core functionality of creating and importing an ID, and authenticating same device and cross devices are in place in the "new" client.
For now I only I make this client available to those who ask via the slack channel.
I am adding in the storage of the SQRL ID into the local keychain and adding in an automatic backup of the ID to iCloud keychain at the moment.
When this is in place I will be adding all the existing testers to the "new" client and making the old one "end of life".
In parallel to this, I will be putting a build of the "new" client through App Store approval so I can get through the bulk of the usual Apple objections and nitpicking (after initial approval tends to get a little easier for subsequent builds with the same version number.)
After I have fixed known issues, typos, icons etc and any more defects that the beta testers report I will go to GA.
The client will not be feature complete at this stage, but at least the wider project will have a working client for iOS for core functionality in the app store
I will then add in the missing features one at a time and test via the beta channel and make them GA.

I just can't commit to when. Sorry, but it is just how it is.

Thanks for asking Brian and thanks to you all for keeping testing and keeping me motivated.
