Using Windows 11 I downloaded sqrl.exe and ran it.
It asked me to install or not install, I chose not to install, just to try that first.
Then went through the setup process which included My name, printing out my "Identiy's Rescue Code" (which was printed) and creating a very long password which I still remember.
Following that I was presented with a screen with 4 options. Not sure I can remember all of them, but I believe the 2nd was to print and at the end there was also an option to Copy Text. I tried the copy text first, then clicked on the print out option. At this point sqlr started hanging only showing me an the eggtimer when I hovered the mouse over it.
I tried to paste the copied text into notepad just to see what it is and accidently hit Ctrl+c instead of Ctrl+v and as a result had lost whatever was copied. (I have since tried the handy Windows 11 feature of "WindowsKey+V" to see the clipboard history but that also showed nothing.)
Eventually I had to close SQLR and start it again. Again opted for "Do Not Install", at this point it simply disappears of screen. I then tried running SQLR again. Cannot recall whether it was at this point, or by trying the SQRL Login through this forum but was then offered and option to setup new or recover I think.
I tried the recover option which gave me three options, 1. to scan a QR code (which I did not have. 2 to Enter Identity and I think 3 was load a text or backup file (which I did not have. Therefore I chose the option to Enter Identity but it suggested I needed to enter my Identities Alphanumeric code. I tried entering my "Identity Rescue Code" that I printed originally but could not get past the 4th character as it was only numeric. Tried the password which got a bit further but could not be entered either at which point I felt stuck.
I then went back and decided the only option left for me was to setup a new identity again, but at this point, when I entered my name, it said my name was already on use on this computer and I had to choose another. I did not really want to do that and kept trying and re-trying to see if I can find another way. What concerned me was that I chose the option not to install the program, but somehow it knew that name had already been used on this computer. This eventually made me think the program is still running as a TSR and so I found it in Task Manager and killed it.
I then restarted SQLR.exe, chose the "Do not Install" option, went to this forum and clicked the SQRL Login, was prompted by SQRL to enter my long password, and managed to get into SQRL. Yay!!. Phew.
What bugs me is that I still do not know what this Alphanumeric code is that I would have had to enter if I needed to recover. Now that I have managed to get passed this, how do I make a backup of whatever it is I need if this ever happens again?
Just thought this bit of feedback would be useful whilst still fresh in my mind. Apologies if this is not posted in an appropriate thread, I did see the notice to say to try and do this and I did try but it seems (like any folder structure) a maze that would only make sense to anybody that regularly uses it, and I am new to this forum and have already spent most of my Saturday morning trying to get this far.
